Elizabeth Pitts Knight

Early Quakers were persecuted. In the Massachusetts Bay colony, Friends were banished on pain of death.

Elizabeth Pitts was born about 1752in Frederick County, Virginia which is now Berkeley County West Virginia. Her parents were Andrew Pitts and Martha Stroud.

When she was a child she moved to a part of Rowan County, North Carolina that became Stokes County in 1789.

She married Thomas Knight on April 12, 1770 in at New Garden Monthly Meeting in Rowan County, North Carolina. Thomas was the son of Abel Knight.

They were Quakers.

Martha Knight (1773, married John Cain),
Rachel Knight (1774, married James Meredith),
Andrew Knight (1776, married Ruth Starbuck),
Mary Knight (1777, married John Meredith),
John Knight (1779, married Sarah Meredith),
Sarah Knight (1783, died age 2),
Anna Knight (1785, married Jesse Baldwin),
Elizabeth Knight (1787, married Isaac Stanley),
Abigail Knight (1789, married John Meredith),

Elizabeth died about 1815 and Thomas died in 1817 in North Carolina.




Rowan County, North Carolina was formed in 1753 from the northern part of Anson County. In 1770, the eastern part was combined with the western part of Orange County to become Guilford County. In 1771 the northeastern part of what remained of Rowan County became Surry County. In 1777 the western part of Rowan County became Burke County. In 1788 the western part became Iredell County. In 1822 the eastern part became Davidson County. Finally, in 1836 the part of Rowan County north of the South Yadkin River became Davie County.
